Sinners
Ryan Coogler let loose...
Sinners is an interesting one. Not least because of the deal the filmmaker Ryan Coogler made with Warner Brothers.. traditionally of course, the studio holds most of the cards, but in this quite amazing deal, on the back of successes with Black Panther and Creed (the director accruing $2billion in BO), Coogler asked that the film rights return to him, after 25 years.
He also took Final Cut, as well as a cut of the Box Office from the day of release (First Position)... An astonishing deal, when one considers the budget of $90m and what has gone before.. this is unprecedented (in modern times) and perhaps a sign of things to come, as studios lose their way.

The good news of course, is that the film has done so well both domestically and abroad, further cementing the brilliance of the agreement, coming in No.1 to bring in $46m on its opening weekend.
It’s a well-written screenplay, taking a genre, as well as audience expectations and then proceeds to turn them on its head, quite delightfully. Try to avoid seeing trailers or reading up on it too much before seeing it, if you can.
Beautifully shot by Autumn Durald Arkapaw (Black Panther, Loki). The acting is strong throughout, with fine turns from Michael B Jordan - doubling as the two leads, but also Miles Caton, Emonie Ellison, Jack O’Donnell, Omar Benson Miller, Delroy Lindo - a great ensemble, backing it all up.
Coogler says he drew inspiration from a few movies, but the one he doesn’t mention is Robert Rodriguez’ 1996 - From Dusk Til Dawn. It struck me even as I was watching, the similarities, not just in storyline, but also the characters and dynamic. Now, there’s obviously no problem with remaking a great movie, word is, there are only five stories out there anyway, but the similarites just clubbed me over the head.

This is not to do the film down at all, I liked it. It delightfully reinvented quite a few hackneyed tropes and of course, I think more black filmmakers need to be telling stories they want to tell: Hats off to Coogler for first having the vision, having the confidence there’d be an audience at this budget and then getting it off the ground, never mind the deal he then cut.
See it. For sure, I’m sure you’ll enjoy it, it’s good.. above average Hollywood fare, but I guess this one issue sticks in my throat, because several days on, I can’t let it go.
Anatomy of a Flop 025
Having seen the cut, Adrian Shergold persuaded me to get out of the situation I was in, with an inexperienced editor who didn’t like the film, who was dating the guy in no hurry for my edit to end, renting the suite out weekly, as he was.
